Our Story
In early 2022, a group of homeschooling families from Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Detroit, MI got together to begin planning a homeschool group at their church and left the meeting realizing that they shared a heart for something different: a Christian classical school that would serve both the families of the church and children of believers throughout the city for decades to come. The original group, composed of educators and church elders, was soon joined by other families who brought legal and entrepreneurial knowledge and skill to the project. In just over a year, what initially seemed like a far-off dream grew into the Detroit Christian school, ready to open its doors to K-3 students in Fall 2023.
The educational needs in Detroit are enormous, and many educators and entrepreneurs have come into the city with grand plans that fizzle out quickly. We know that even the best efforts and plans of man cannot transform our own or our children’s lives, much less a city. But we also know that with Christ nothing is impossible. The founding committee of DCS seeks to provide Christian families in Detroit the opportunity to give their children a Christ-centered, academically rigorous education in the same city where they live, work, and worship.
The Detroit Christian School logo incorporates symbolic elements that represent the school’s Christian, historical, and academic heritage. The shield at the heart of the logo—and the cross at its center—represent the centrality of the Christian gospel at DCS and the strength and protection afforded by God’s word. The three buds at each end of the cross represent the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that make up the divine trinity. Around the shield wrap olive branches, long considered symbols of classical education and often depicted in early Christian artworks. Behind the olive branches is a compass, which represents Detroit’s history as a trading hub, commercial waterway, and Underground Railroad axis.
At the outer edge of the logo is a ring of mosaic tiles. In addition to bearing a symbolic connection to the ancient Greek and Roman roots of classical education, the tiles mirror the mosaic designs on the floor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church, the church out of which DCS was formed.
Taken together, the elements of the DCS logo represent the school’s commitment to Gospel centrality, the city of Detroit, and classical rigor.
